If you’re looking for things to do that are fun for the whole family – here’s a few ideas! All of these places were lots of fun and worth visiting once, twice even more. Please be sure to check back periodically as I plan to add new locations in the future. For your information and to help shed a little more light on these places, I’ve added commentary based on my personal experience. Feel free to leave comments, feedback or ask questions.
Hope you enjoy! -judy
Stamford Museum & Nature Center: There is lots to see and do including visit with the animals, walking the trails or enjoying natures playground. http://www.stamfordmuseum.org
Judy’s feedback: “This is a great place to take the family to enjoy a nice day out strolling around, meeting animals and enjoying the fresh air. We love the “Animal Embassy” building where you can visit and learn about snakes, lizards, turtles and other exotic animals. There’s picnic tables if you’d like to watch the ducks swimming by while you have your lunch or snack. You can also become a member for an annual fee which will not only entitle you to unlimited visits, but also discounts for special events.”
Maritime Aquarium: Explore the marine life and maritime culture of Long Island Sound. Visit with the seals, enjoy the stingray touch tank and enjoy watching the playful Meerkats. Don’t forget to check out the IMAX theater! http://www.maritimeaquarium.org/home.html
Judy’s feedback: “This is a great place to learn all about the various creatures that live in the Long Island Sound and more. Everyone loves meeting the seals during their feedings – they are so playful and enjoy the audience. The stingray touch tank and the IMAX theater are huge hits too (although very young children may be overwhelmed at the IMAX). The kids can also play in a fishing boat or create and design their own toy sail boat (for a nominal fee). There is also a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat and relax or if you’d rather, within a short walking distance there are several other family friendly restaurants too. You can probably plan on visiting this location for no more than 3 or 4 hours, but it is well worth the visit.”
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo: Enjoy your day visiting the over 300 animals representing the North and South American species. Visit the Farmyard to see our goats, pigs, cows and many other critters. Take a break to grab a bite to eat in the Peacock Cafe – then stop by to see and ride a carousel. http://beardsleyzoo.org
Judy’s feedback: “This zoo is a fun place to visit without having to spend your entire day. There are plenty of interesting animals and trails to explore as well as a beautiful old-time carousel to ride and a gift shop. The kids really enjoy the roaming peacocks that frequently display their gorgeous feathers which make for a great photo opportunity. They also have a greenhouse with various plants and flowers on display and a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.”
Lake Compounce: New England’s Amusement and Water Park – rides, shows and adventures – fun for the whole family! http://www.lakecompounce.com
Judy’s feedback: “This is a really fun amusement and water park with something for everyone! There’s thrill rides, rollercoasters, kiddie rides and lots of water fun for all. There are places to eat and relax, a candy store and an ice-cream parlor too. For a small fee you can rent lockers and they have showers for your convenience, when your day is done. You can definitely spend your whole day here – lots of fun for the entire family!”
The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM): Come to CMOM ready to play! Visit the exhibit “Adventures of Dora and Diego” – see Dora’s house, build the walls of Rainbow Bridge and learn fun animal facts with Diego. Visit the “Playworks” area and play on a fire engine, climb on the talking dragon or play with our giant light brite! http://www.cmom.org/
Judy’s feedback: “This place is lots of fun and has several floors all filled with various activities. Unfortunately, there is no place to eat here. To accommodate people wanting to take a “lunch break” during their visit, if you save your admission sticker you can leave and re-enter in the same day. This is a very fun day for the kids – I would recommend for children 10 and under.”
Central Park Zoo: Aside from this beautiful park in the middle of Manhattan, there are so many things to see and do there. One of the major attractions there is the Central Park Zoo, that was featured in the movie “Madagascar”. This is a very peaceful place to walk trails, take photos or enjoy grabbing a bite to eat. You can visit the snow leopards, polar bears, seals, monkeys and much more. http://www.centralparkzoo.com/
Judy’s feedback: “Although this is the zoo featured in the Madagascar movie, it is not exactly the same. Yes, it is a zoo with plenty of animals, but there are no lions, no zebras, no giraffes, no hippos….wait please don’t be discouraged, there are penguins!!! They’re not as mischievous or entertaining as the ones in the movie, but they are fun to watch! This is still a great place to relax and enjoy – and of course it’s in beautiful Central Park in the heart of New York City!
